Chester

Several years ago, Kevin (my CFO) and I headed downtown for lunch meeting at Joe’s Crab Shack. We parked the car and a man comes up to me and asks me for money. I said, “Sir, I would love to buy you a meal but I refuse to give you money.” He quickly accepted my offer and we went to Joe’s together.

Because we had people meeting us and we had to talk shop, I had Chester seated (like a king) and told the waitress to get him whatever he wants – nothing from the bar, however. Chester ate well that day and when he left, I talked to him for a few minutes and gave him my card.

Over the last few years, Chester has stopped by – requesting things like underwear, socks, shoes, etc and I quickly make these things appear for him. Sometimes he will have enough bus money to come see “Mr Wayne” – unannounced, I must say. Most of the time he needs money to get back to the homeless shelter. When he comes, I talk with him and give him an office to call family, etc.(note- that he really makes himself at home, on the phone – feet on desk – kinda funny) Why not?

Yesterday on my direct (private) line, which I guess Chester used, I received a call from his sister looking for him. I said, “I am sorry that Chester is not in today but I will be more than happy to give him a message.” She replied back – “Is this Mr Wayne, “ I said “ yes” “She proceeded to tell me that I was the only white man that has ever accepted her brother” and she began to cry. NOTE -So now I have a meeting to get to, people wanting to see me and Chester’s sister is crying on the phone. WHOOPS!!

I commented quickly with much conviction, “ I do not care what color you are, what your situation is, what religion you are – just that you have a soul. I care about that. You, Chester and everyone matters to me, the world and GOD and do not ever think anything different,” she commented “amen and then proceeded to tell me that she knew Chester was not there but he told her that if she ever needs encouragement to call Mr Wayne.” I was surprised and chuckled and said, ”ok.” She asked me, ”can I call you again sometime,” I said “ yes, matter of fact here is my cell phone number – call me anytime.” She continued to weep, we said our good bye’s and got on with the day.

Last night sitting at home after a dinner with ME, I reflected how cool that was and how super excited I was to be there to answer the phone. I thought if she needed to hear what I said, and it inspired her, then it is all worth it.

I love offering HOPE to people. (and the $14 I spent on lunch for Chester – was well worth it)
